First-time firearm owner checklist

A responsible first purchase begins before checkout and continues after the transfer. Use this list to keep the decision organized.

Before choosing a firearm

  • □ Identify every authorized and unauthorized household member.
  • □ Review current federal, state and local possession and storage rules.
  • □ Select and measure a suitable locked storage location.
  • □ Compare unloaded examples with a qualified dealer or instructor.
  • □ Confirm that the authorized user can safely operate the controls.
  • □ Price secure storage, instruction, protective equipment and practice.

Before ordering online

  • □ Confirm the exact manufacturer SKU and configuration.
  • □ Contact the receiving FFL and confirm the transfer fee.
  • □ Verify the dealer accepts shipments from the selected retailer.
  • □ Read the retailer’s firearm return and cancellation policy.
  • □ Confirm any permit, waiting-period or identification requirements.

At the transfer

  • □ Follow all dealer instructions and complete required paperwork truthfully.
  • □ Confirm the model, caliber and SKU match the order.
  • □ Inspect the firearm according to dealer policy before accepting transfer.
  • □ Obtain the manufacturer’s manual and included lock or accessories.

After the transfer

  • □ Store the firearm securely before doing anything else.
  • □ Read the entire manufacturer’s manual.
  • □ Arrange competent instruction.
  • □ Learn the firearm’s status indicators and controls in a safe training environment.
  • □ Establish household access rules and key or combination control.
  • □ Record identifying information in a separate secure place.
  • □ Schedule periodic storage and inventory reviews.

Do not skip the “boring” purchases

A safe or lockbox, quality eye and hearing protection, a secure transport case and professional instruction often improve real-world ownership more than an upgraded finish or accessory package.
